Fixed game A perfect anniversary for Aguero and an easy win for City

Blog and reviews of fixed-games

With two goals from Sergio Aguero and one from Nicholas Otamendi, Manchester City beat Southampton 3-1 in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The Citizens had no problems, and in the second half, they allowed themselves a break, which led to the Jack Saints` honorable goal for the Saints.

Joseph Guardiola has released a squad that has both title holders and players who play less frequently during the season. Claudio Bravo stood at the door, and in defense, Kyle Walker and Nicolas Otamendi got the young Eric Garcia and Angelinho. The attack was led by Sergio Aguero in his match number 350 for the club, Bernard Silva and Gabriel Jesus, and the three in the middle of the field were Riyad Marez, Phil Fouden and Tom Doyle, who made their official debut for the Nationals. Curiously, 18-year-old Doyle is the grandson of club legends Glyn Pardo and Mike Doyle, who have a total of 950 games for City.

After a shocking 0-9 loss to Leicester, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttle made six changes to the starting eleven. Under the frame was Alex McCarthy, and Shane Long and Sofia Buffalo partnered in the attack. The Saints have been in front of the penalty box since the opening minutes with the sole purpose of preventing an early goal. The first opportunity opened up to Mares, but McCarthy saved the Algerian`s heavy blow. Despite their total dominance, the hosts did not create other positions until midway through the half, and Southampton was surprisingly steady.

That changed in the 20th minute when Nicholas Otamendi found the result. Doyle made a short corner kick to Bernardo Silva, and he centered perfectly on the Argentine, who overcame Oriol Romeu and sent the ball into the net. Aguero tried to double with a direct free kick, but fired at the target.

However, the Argentinean commemorates his anniversary match with a goal that fell in the 38th minute. City players made a series of passes, matting the defense of Southampton, and Aguero remained the easiest. At the end of the half, Angelinho found the uncovered Marez, but McCarthy killed his shot.

The guests did not change their behavior after the break, and this could not do anything good. Bernardo Silva missed the third goal but Aguero made it in the 56th minute. The Argentine was lucky enough to strike Mares with a ricochet in the Saints defender and the ball could reach him. Kuhn just put his foot down and the score was 3-0. A short while later, Gabriel Jesus returned with a heel to Marez, but Jan Bednarek self-sacrificed himself on a string and killed him.

In the 65th minute Bravo had to be decisive for the first time in the match. The Chilean guard rescued Buffalo`s shot and then shot Stevens with a shot. A quarter before the end, James Ward-Praus sent a cross from the corner, the ball reached the far post to Jack Stevens, and he returned a shot to the delight of the few Saints fans. In the remaining minutes Guardiola allowed Adrian Bernabe to make his debut at Etihad Stadium. City did not want to score more goals at all costs, and were clearly already thinking of Saturday`s next match predicted by fixed-games against the same opponent, but already in the Premier League.
