To be honest, the season is terrible: at first there were retirements, and I was slow, although the car was fast, and then I became fast, but our team is not as good as before. Everything went wrong.
At the beginning of the year I had a lot of difficulties with the car, with the new regulations - all this did not suit my aerobatic style. There were also problems with the control of the Pirelli tires.
For some reason, the race starts were difficult. This is an innate problem that does not allow you to take off as cool as before.
I`ve never been 0. 2-0. 3 seconds behind my partner before, and it`s impossible to put up with it. I always felt that I would be fast in any car. But for the first time in my career, I was driving a competitive car and not feeling comfortable.
I had to challenge myself, look for new settings and style of flying - I will not say that I wanted to discover this path, because I hoped that everything would happen more naturally and positively.
But everything worked out. I kept discipline, tried many things and made mistakes, stepped back, and then found a new path and took a small step forward.
I had to rediscover my talents to find speed. I did not give up, continued to attack even in difficult moments - and now, at the end of the season, you see that this work has paid off.
I`m realist. I know how good Charles [Leclerc] is in these [difficult] conditions. This year he performed at a level close to Max Verstappen.
For me, he had an almost perfect season, except for two or three typical mistakes that happen every year for everyone, or luck, which he, like me, probably lacked a little.
Looking at other drivers on the grid, you understand that it is quite difficult to change the course of the season or the feel of the car. This rarely happens. But the fact that I did it makes me happy. I will work on this in the last races in order to have a more complete next year, said Sainz.
